What is the main ways I can protect precious objects when on display?

Their is vast array of inappropriate display methods due to – light, temperature, pests…
Despite what they might tell you, human beings are one of the greatest threats to collections when on display, not only due to surface compounds, such as oil, sweat and make-up that they carry on their skin, but also because we generate heat, drop stuff and steal. So when displaying objects in the open or using them for show-and-tell remember we are putting undue strain on the objects and risk loss or damage.

So a really important question before spending time and money on display designs, cases, environmnets, etc. is can I digitally display an object, using screens or 3D printers, and what are the benefits?
